Crochet Workshop - A Day with Shelley and Susannah

June this year, the CGA conference was a great opportunity to meet makers and other designers. Fellow Aussie designer Shelley Husband and I hit it off, we got to talking and I am heading east again to catch up with her in Victoria where she lives, on my way (spoiler alert) back to Sydney! We are going to have a blast – two crochet fanatics getting together – we thought why not hold a little crochet party for others to join us and learn cool crochet stuff too!?

Our crochet workshop/party is suitably called “A Day with Shelley and Susannah” which has a nice ring to it, right!?

Most Aussie crocheters will know who Shelley is because she’s a crochet legend. She has published a heap of crochet books and including her latest release Granny Square Academy 2. That’s right, Shelley’s all about the G-square and has taken humble groups of 3 trebles and turned it on its head. Her G-square and blanket designs are sophisticated, modern, and full of texture. Her books are awesome, focussed on skill building with each square!

And this brings me to what A Day with Shelley and Susannah is all about: skill building and finessing your crochet. We absolutely share this passion for crochet geekery that elevates your projects to the next level! Our day will be all about crochet gauge, tips for seamless finishes and how to crochet garments through practical sample making and demonstrations.

What will we be making in the workshop?

Shelley will begin our day, chatting about crochet gauge and some cool seamless crochet tips and lead everyone through making of a couple of granny squares. Then I will take over, sharing lots about making crochet garments that fit as you make a mini crochet garment sample. The mini garment sample is based on this One Sleeve Poncho design and participants will receive the pattern in the class.

Where and when is it happening?

A Day with Shelley and Susannah will be on Thursday 26th of October at the Portland Library in Bentinck Street Portland, Victoria.

We'll start at 9.30 am and wrap up at 4.30 pm.

Tea, coffee, water, and some goodies from the local Bakehouse will be provided for morning tea. We’ll be breaking for about an hour for lunch. You are welcome to bring your own or head out to one of the cafes nearby.

What skill level do I need?

You need to be confident with the most common crochet stitches, have some experience reading a crochet pattern or chart and be willing to have a go at new techniques.

If you can confidently crochet a basic granny square, you have the skills you need. Being familiar and practised with foundation double crochet (UK: fdc) = foundation single crochet (US: fsc) would be ideal. Click here for my blog post all about it.

Will there be homework to do before class?

Yep, just a little though. We will send you a PDF with all the instructions of what to do a week before our day of fun!

What’s the Cancellation Policy?

Cancellations made 2 weeks or more in advance of the event date will incur a 25% fee. Cancellations made within 2 weeks of the event date will incur a 50% fee. You will receive a 100% refund should your place be filled. Please let us know as soon as possible should you need to cancel so we can fill the spot.

How do I book my spot for this crochet workshop?

It’s super easy! Click here!

You’ll be taken to Shelley’s online shop to read all the details and book your spot. There are a limited number of places available, and this is a one-off event!

If you miss out, add your name to the waiting list here in case anyone needs to cancel.

Are there any other plans up our collective sleeve for the day?

(Pun intended)…

Why yes, glad you asked! Shelley and I will bring along some of our samples for you to have a close look at. I will have a few made items, crochet patterns and kits to purchase, and Shelley will bring a small number of books to inspire you to keep on making.

We are so excited to share this day with you! It's going to be brilliant! Now that we have all the crochet plans sorted, we are discussing outfits – we just might be wardrobe twins for the day in our Shelley Sweaters!

Before I go…

Yes, I did drop a hint about Sydney. After I leave Shelley’s place I am heading to Sydney early November, but I will save that news for another blog post – subscribe here if you want to stay in the loop!

Happy crocheting as always...

Susannah (Peppergoose)
